The book “The Vampire Diaries” by L.J. Smith is about a teenage girl named Elena who gets swept up in a whirlwind of supernatural drama surrounding her vampire boyfriend, Stefan, and his evil brother Damon. Through out the story Elena is sent on an emotional roller coaster that changes who she is and what she believes in.
First, Elena begins to break when she becomes overwhelmed by the secrets she is keeping from her friends. “Elena felt her own eyes fill and her stern expression crumple...Elena found she couldn’t help the tears that slid down her face.” This shows that Elena’s walls are crumbling and that she is weak and needs her friends. She also changes when her aunt tells her to stay away from Stefan because she, along with all of Elena’s high school, thinks Stefan killed their teacher. “Anger was a welcome release, and the words crowded in Elena’s throat, all trying to get out at once.” This shows that Elena is tired of people accusing Stefan and telling her what to do. Overall Elena is stressed and overwhelmed by everything going on in her life.
All in all, I feel sorry for Elena. She seems torn between Stefan, her friends, and her family. I think Elena should think about herself for once and do what is best for her, and if that is telling her friends all of the secrets she has been hiding, then i think she should.
